How to Choose a University in Jordan: A Criteria-Based Framework
Instead of a ranking, a set of criteria you can actually apply — and an explanation of why the answer changes depending on what you intend to do afterwards.
There is no single best university in Jordan, and any list that says otherwise is either using unstated criteria or selling something. What there is, is a set of criteria that produce different answers for different students. Here is the framework this portal uses.
1. Purpose first
Are you seeking a profession, an academic career, a language, or a migration pathway? These point in different directions. A student targeting medical licensure in a specific country has a completely different decision surface from a student who wants to study Arabic for two years and go home bilingual.
2. Recognition and accreditation
Verify the specific programme, not just the institution name. Check the 高等教育省's institution lists and the Higher Education Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission, and for regulated professions check the destination regulator's requirements. If you plan to practise outside Jordan, do this before you enrol.
3. Subject strength in your field
Institutional reputation and departmental strength can diverge sharply. A university that is strong overall may have a modest programme in your specific discipline, and the reverse happens too. Ask about the specific department: staff, laboratories, clinical placements, industry links, publication record.
4. Language of instruction
Confirm the language for your programme and for each year of it. 'English-medium' can mean anything from fully English to substantially English with Arabic-language courses mixed in. For health programmes, clinical communication may involve Arabic regardless of the classroom language — plan for that.
5. Cost, honestly calculated
Fees vary by institution, programme, degree level and student category — Jordanian versus international. Never assume public is cheaper without checking the specific schedule. And calculate total cost, not tuition alone: accommodation, transport, materials and clinical or laboratory charges can change the ranking entirely.
6. 所在地 and daily logistics
Amman offers the widest choice and the largest international community at the highest cost. Irbid is a student city with lower costs and better everyday Arabic immersion. Smaller cities — Karak, Mafraq, Tafila, Ma'an — are inexpensive and quiet, with fewer amenities. The right answer depends on whether you need an internship market, immersion, or affordability.
7. Support for your actual situation
If you are an international student, ask specifically about international student services, housing eligibility for your student category, and what happens in your first weeks. If you are a non-native speaker entering an Arabic-medium programme, ask what language support exists in year one — this is a common and underestimated failure point.
8. Outcomes, with appropriate scepticism
Ask about graduate employment, progression to postgraduate study, and industry relationships. Treat unsupported claims the way you would treat unsupported claims anywhere. Where a university appears in an international ranking, note the provider and the edition — positions move annually and differ between providers.

Sources & verification
Priority order: official Jordanian government authorities → official institution websites → accreditation organisations → official ranking organisations → Visit Jordan → other reliable sources. Claims that could not be verified from these are marked as unverified rather than presented as fact.
