International School Curricula in Jordan: How to Compare Them Properly

IB, American, British, bilingual and national — what actually differs, what families routinely get wrong, and the specific questions that reveal the real programme.

Families comparing international schools in Jordan often compare brand names. The more useful comparison is between programmes — because the curriculum determines which university pathways stay open, and because a school's description of itself is not the same as its authorisations.

The International Baccalaureate

IB authorisation is programme-specific. A school may hold the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, or only some of them. The authorisation status can be checked against the International Baccalaureate Organization's own school listing — which is the verification step most families skip. 'IB school' without a named programme is an incomplete statement.

American and Advanced Placement

American-model schools typically offer a US-style curriculum, and many offer Advanced Placement courses in upper secondary. AP is subject-based and modular, which differs structurally from the IB Diploma's full-programme model. For university admission, both are widely recognised, but they produce different transcripts.

British

British-curriculum schools lead toward IGCSE and A-level examinations. The relevant verification is which examination board's qualifications students actually sit, not whether the school describes itself as British in orientation.

Bilingual and national

Many schools blend an international curriculum with the Jordanian national programme, and some operate genuinely bilingual models with Arabic and English both used substantially. The important question for a blended school is which programme the student will be enrolled in at each stage — because blending can mean flexibility, or it can mean a transition point that arrives unexpectedly in Grade 10.

The comparison questions that actually matter

Which authorisations does the school currently hold, from which bodies, verifiable where? Which external examinations do students sit, and in which years? What is the language of instruction by subject and by grade? What is the maximum class size? What learning support exists, and what are the eligibility criteria? What is the university-counselling process, and where do recent cohorts progress to? What is the total cost including transport, meals, activities and one-off fees?

On fees

This portal does not publish school fees. Independent school fees change annually, and a stale figure is worse than no figure. Obtain the current schedule from each school's admissions office, and ask for total cost rather than headline tuition.

There is no single best school

There isn't one. The right school is the one whose programme matches the university pathway the student is heading toward, whose language balance suits the family, whose learning-support provision matches the student's needs, and whose commute the family can actually sustain for years. Those four criteria produce different answers for different families.
