Student Life in Jordan: Housing, Transport, Cost and What Daily Life Is Actually Like

Practical, non-promotional guidance on the parts of studying in Jordan that determine whether the year goes well — and the ones students underestimate.

Most guidance on student life in Jordan is written to attract students. This is written to help you plan. The difference shows up in the topics: housing eligibility, commute arithmetic, documentation, and the specific ways a good year goes wrong.

Housing: the eligibility question comes first

Some institutions offer university accommodation; private rental is widely available everywhere. But eligibility rules differ between degree students and non-degree or language-programme students, so confirm your own category before assuming you can access campus housing. In Amman, student accommodation clusters in the university districts — Al-Jubeiha and west Amman around the University of Jordan, and the corridors serving the outer campuses. Rent falls with distance, and commute time rises with it.

Transport: commute time, not distance

Amman has an extensive minibus and bus network, an expanding BRT corridor, and widely used ride-hailing. Because of the city's terrain and traffic, the same physical distance can take very different amounts of time depending on route and hour. Many universities run their own transport or are served by shared taxis. Research routes and timings before signing a lease — this is the single most common housing mistake.

Cost: city first

Amman is the most expensive Jordanian city for students, particularly rent and transport. Irbid, Karak, Mafraq and Tafila are substantially cheaper. Do not budget from a national average; budget from your actual city. Verify current local prices when you arrive or shortly before, rather than relying on figures published in an earlier year.

Health and insurance

Many universities have health centres or student medical arrangements, with varying scope. That is a different thing from the health or medical insurance your residency status may require. 留学生 should confirm both — separately — before travelling.

Banking, internet and administration

Internet access is widely available and Jordan has a well-developed banking sector, but opening an account and handling international transfers involve documentation and residency conditions that depend on your status. Your institution may have arrangements that simplify it; ask during orientation rather than after your first transfer fails.

What students actually remember

Jordan's advantage outside the classroom is proximity to an extraordinary heritage and natural landscape. Students routinely combine study with weekend visits — Petra, Jerash, Ajloun, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Umm Qais. University language centres and institutions sometimes organise such trips directly. Treating these as part of the education rather than as tourism is closer to how they function: they are where language, history and geography become concrete.

Safety

Jordan is generally regarded as stable and welcoming to international students, and has hosted them for decades. No country or city is risk-free, and this portal does not claim otherwise. The practical steps are the ordinary ones: register with your embassy, follow your institution's guidance, take normal care at night and with belongings, keep copies of documents, and read your own government's current travel advice before you travel.

Sources & verification

Priority order: official Jordanian government authorities → official institution websites → accreditation organisations → official ranking organisations → Visit Jordan → other reliable sources. Claims that could not be verified from these are marked as unverified rather than presented as fact.
