The four options

University student housing, usually dormitory-style with eligibility rules that often differ for international students; private rental, typically shared with flatmates; furnished student flats clustered near campuses; and homestay, less common than in some countries but the strongest option for daily language immersion.

What drives cost

City, district, distance from campus, furnishing, whether utilities are included and lease length. Amman is materially more expensive than Irbid, Karak, Mafraq or Tafila; within Amman, rent varies sharply between districts even on the same side of the city.

Questions to ask before signing

Are utilities included, and what has the monthly bill actually been? Where does the water come from and how is it delivered? What is the internet provision? What is the lease term and notice period? Is a deposit or guarantor required? Will the landlord provide a documented tenancy, which you may need for residency procedures?

Commute versus rent

In Amman a cheaper apartment further out can cost more in time and taxi fares than a more expensive one near campus. Test the commute at the time of day you will actually travel.

Getting current information

Institutional student-affairs and international offices normally maintain housing lists and know the current market. Their advice is usually more current than anything published online, including this page.
