Study Arabic in Jordan

Jordan is one of the strongest places in the Arab world to learn Arabic — but 'learn Arabic' describes at least three different projects, and the programmes that serve them are not the same. Understanding the distinction is more useful than any list of institutes.

In short

Arabic study in Jordan divides into three registers: Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the formal written and cross-regional register; Jordanian/Levantine colloquial Arabic, the everyday spoken register; and Classical Arabic, the language of the Qur'an and classical texts. Some institutes integrate MSA with colloquial study in a single core programme; others separate them formally. Which is right depends entirely on what you want to do with the language — and choosing a programme before answering that question is the most common mistake learners make.

Criteria used on this page

No institution is described here as universally "the best". Each list states the criteria behind it, and the right choice depends on the student's objective. Criteria applied:

  • Your objective — Read and write; speak and function; or engage with classical texts. These are different programmes.
  • Register mix — Whether the programme integrates MSA with colloquial Arabic or separates them.
  • Contact hours — Total hours and weekly intensity, not the label on the course.
  • Placement and level structure — How you are placed, and whether progress is documented.
  • Documentation — What certificate, credit or level record you receive, and whether your institution will accept it.
  • Format — Semester, summer intensive, private tuition or online.
  • Immersion environment — The institute's city and language policy shape how much Arabic you actually speak.
  • Housing and visa support — Material for longer enrolments.

The three registers

This distinction changes which programme is right for you.

Modern Standard Arabic

Register

The formal written and cross-regional spoken register: reading, writing, news media, academic and professional communication across the Arab world.

Jordanian / Levantine Arabic

Register

The colloquial register — what you hear in conversation and daily life, and the register that determines whether you can actually function in the country.

Classical Arabic

Register

Primarily the language of the Qur'an and the texts built on its model; a distinct scholarly undertaking rather than 'harder Modern Standard Arabic'.

Formats

The same level of proficiency can be reached in very different structures.

Summer intensive programmes

Format

Short, high-intensity study — the format most short-term learners use, and the one where programme design matters most.

Private lessons

Format

One-to-one or small-group tuition: maximum scheduling flexibility and fastest correction, at higher cost per hour.

Online Arabic

Format

Remote study, usually private or small-group — useful for continuity between visits to Jordan, and for preparation before arrival.

What to verify before you pay

Five questions, in order. Does the course actually run in the term you want, at your level? What is the placement process? How many contact hours per week? What documentation do you receive at the end, and will your home institution or employer accept it? Is housing or homestay assistance available for your enrolment length? Ask all of them in writing before transferring money.

Priority order: official Jordanian government authorities → official institution websites → accreditation organisations → official ranking organisations → Visit Jordan → other reliable sources. Claims that could not be verified from these are marked as unverified rather than presented as fact.
