Last checked September 2026

In short

University student housing (dormitory-style, eligibility rules apply and are often different for international students); private rental apartments, typically shared; furnished student flats clustered near campuses; and homestay, which is less common than in some countries but exists and is the strongest immersion option for Arabic learners.

The options

University student housing (dormitory-style, eligibility rules apply and are often different for international students); private rental apartments, typically shared; furnished student flats clustered near campuses; and homestay, which is less common than in some countries but exists and is the strongest immersion option for Arabic learners.

What drives cost

City, district, distance from campus, whether the unit is furnished, whether utilities are included, and the length of the lease. Amman is materially more expensive than Irbid, Karak, Mafraq or Tafila; within Amman, rent varies sharply by district.

What to check before signing

Whether utilities are included and what the actual monthly cost has been; the water supply situation (tanks and delivery are normal in much of Jordan); internet provision; the lease term and notice period; whether a guarantor or deposit is required; and whether the landlord accepts international tenants and can document the tenancy, which you may need for residency procedures.

Commute versus rent

In Amman, a cheaper apartment further out can cost more in time and taxi fare than a more expensive one near campus. Measure the commute at the time of day you will actually travel before deciding.

Getting help

Institutional student-affairs offices frequently maintain housing lists, and many universities run their own accommodation offices. Ask the international office specifically, because their advice is usually more current than anything published online.

Verify with the institution and the authority

Requirements in this area are set by institutions and Jordanian authorities, and they change. Use this page to know what to ask, then confirm the current position with the institution's international office and the relevant ministry before acting.

Sources & verification

Priority order: official Jordanian government authorities → official institution websites → accreditation organisations → official ranking organisations → Visit Jordan → other reliable sources. Claims that could not be verified from these are marked as unverified rather than presented as fact.
