In short

A small northern city built around one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the region. Jerash is unusual in being both a residential city and an archaeological site of the first rank. The Roman remains — Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Plaza, the colonnaded cardo, two theatres and the hippodrome — sit inside the modern town, which makes the city a base for archaeology, history, tourism and conservation students as well as a quick trip from Amman and Irbid.

Living and studying in Jerash

Jerash is unusual in being both a residential city and an archaeological site of the first rank. The Roman remains — Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Plaza, the colonnaded cardo, two theatres and the hippodrome — sit inside the modern town, which makes the city a base for archaeology, history, tourism and conservation students as well as a quick trip from Amman and Irbid.

Cost of living

Low. Smaller-city rents and daily costs, with Amman prices available an hour down the road if needed.

Transport

Buses and shared taxis to Amman and Irbid, along the Amman–Irbid corridor. A car is useful; walking works inside the central area.

Housing

A small private rental market, mostly arranged locally rather than through online listings. Students studying in Amman or Irbid sometimes live here and commute, which trades rent for travel time.

Student life

Quiet by Amman standards. The archaeological site dominates the city’s identity, and the wider student scene is limited — most students here are attached to institutions in Amman or Irbid.

Advantages

  • Roman archaeology on the doorstep
  • Low cost of living
  • Close to Amman and Irbid
  • Unusually direct access to a major archaeological site for study and fieldwork

Considerations

  • Very limited local higher-education provision
  • Small private rental market
  • Fewer services and less student community than Amman or Irbid
  • Most students commute rather than live here
