Education in Jordan
The Universities Sector in Jordan
How the university sector is organised and how to read its categories — a structural guide with official sources.
In short
The Ministry of Higher Education publishes separate lists of official (public) Jordanian universities, private Jordanian universities and institutions operating under special laws. Those categories are administrative facts, not quality judgements, and they are the correct way to begin comparing institutions.
Three official categories
The Ministry of Higher Education publishes separate lists of official (public) Jordanian universities, private Jordanian universities and institutions operating under special laws. Those categories are administrative facts, not quality judgements, and they are the correct way to begin comparing institutions.
Public universities
Government-established institutions distributed across the Kingdom. They generally have the largest student bodies, the broadest subject portfolios and the strongest research volume, and they include both comprehensive universities and specialised science-and-technology institutions.
Private universities
Established under private licence within the same national framework. Many are concentrated in Amman, with institutions elsewhere in the Kingdom. Class sizes are frequently smaller and programme portfolios more focused, which can be a genuine advantage or a real limitation depending on the field.
Special-law institutions
A small group established by dedicated legislation, often with a specific technical, open-learning or applied mandate. They are neither simply public nor simply private, and are best evaluated on the specific programme.
How to compare
Compare at programme level. Departmental strength, accreditation of the specific programme, laboratory and clinical provision, language of instruction, and where the qualification is recognised afterwards matter more than institution-wide reputation — particularly for professional fields.
Sources & verification
Priority order: official Jordanian government authorities → official institution websites → accreditation organisations → official ranking organisations → Visit Jordan → other reliable sources. Claims that could not be verified from these are marked as unverified rather than presented as fact.
