Transportation for Students in Jordan

Buses, service taxis, ride-hailing and campus transport.

Last checked September 2026

In short

Public buses and minibuses, shared 'service' taxis running fixed routes, ride-hailing apps, private taxis and, at many universities, institutional transport between campuses and student districts.

The modes

Public buses and minibuses, shared 'service' taxis running fixed routes, ride-hailing apps, private taxis and, at many universities, institutional transport between campuses and student districts.

What students actually experience

Public transport is inexpensive but can be slow and crowded, particularly at peak times, and coverage varies by city. Ride-hailing has become the default for many students in Amman because fares are predictable and the service is door-to-door. Shared taxis are cheap and widely used but require knowing the routes.

Amman specifically

Amman's geography — hills, spread-out districts and heavy traffic in specific corridors — means commute time rather than distance determines how long a journey takes. This directly affects where you should live.

Elsewhere

Irbid is compact and walkable in its central student districts. Smaller university cities have less frequent public transport, and campus transport or shared taxis matter more. In every case, ask the institution what transport it provides before you choose housing.

Cost

Transport is a real recurring cost in Amman and a small one in walkable university towns. Budget it explicitly rather than treating it as incidental.

Verify with the institution and the authority

Requirements in this area are set by institutions and Jordanian authorities, and they change. Use this page to know what to ask, then confirm the current position with the institution's international office and the relevant ministry before acting.

Sources & verification

Priority order: official Jordanian government authorities → official institution websites → accreditation organisations → official ranking organisations → Visit Jordan → other reliable sources. Claims that could not be verified from these are marked as unverified rather than presented as fact.
